Niantic, the mobile app company and creators Pokémon GO, is launching Truffel, a new App that is a new way of exploring your city and creating lists of your personal favorites. On Thursday, December 8th at Zilker Brewing in Austin, Texas, Niantic will reveal the Truffel app that is currently in private alpha.
A small team at Niantic has been working the new app that focuses purely on the joy of discovering the hidden gems of a city, and sharing it with friends for the last 18 months. Truffel has its roots in the original app Field Trip, and in the 100s of Niantic live events they have organized across the globe. Niantic goal for Truffel is to open up that joy of exploration to folks that might not be so focused on games.
Truffel does have some gaming elements for exploring and discovering however it’s more of a Shared Map of your favorite places, pinned together with your friends. Niantic premise is that your local friends are often a better source of where to go and what to do than some well-trained algorithm. Their tag line for the app is “your friends know where to go.”
As stated above Truffel is currently in private alpha and early testers will receive an exclusive link to download the app. They are calling it an Alpha because they want to grow and develop it with their users, and many aspects of the app are still changing.
The Truffel app in alpha will be available in Austin only as of now. Niantic hopes to be able to expand Truffel to the rest of the US and beyond during 2023. Register your email address to receive the latest updates and find out when the app will be available for you here.
In celebration of their launch, the Truffel kickoff party is Thursday, December 8th at Zilker Brewing. Attendees can snag free food from Spicy Boys, free drinks, live music and prizes like Alamo Drafthouse gift cards & merch plus meet the Truffel team!
