LAYER and XGIMI Announces New MIRA Projector at IFA Berlin

During IFA Berlin 2023, design agency LAYER and leading projector brand XGIMI, launched MIRA, a next-generation short-throw projector that revolutionizes home entertainment. Designed by LAYER and founder Benjamin Hubert, MIRA is a three in-one product that combines projection, audio, and smart TV.

It projects a high-quality 100-inch display onto any surface in almost any light conditions, and seamlessly dissolves into the home interior when not in use. MIRA is defined by its discreet fabric-wrapped form that challenges the visual dominance of the conventional “black box” television in our living spaces and the overt high-performance language of traditional technology products.

XGIMI and LAYER conducted in-depth user research to explore what consumers want from a home entertainment experience. The result is an elegant short-throw projector with a warm and welcoming, yet unobtrusive, form that can create a high-quality 100-inch display when turned on. The fabric-wrapped body of the projector is defined by soft curves and a sophisticated neutral color palette that takes inspiration from interior design rather than the conventional “high-tech” language of home entertainment devices.

The textile and metallic finish of MIRA celebrates material tactility and texture to heighten the user experience. This approach increases the magic of the large-scale moving image appearing as there is a less obvious source.

The XGIMI projector screen – known as a curtain – has also been re-designed with a matte material and frame. Special nano-materials create an ultra-matte surface to reduce glare and reflections caused by ambient light and offer superior viewing comfort. Users can also vividly project artwork onto the curtain (or any surface) to create a home gallery. Built-in proximity sensors in the MIRA projector allow specially designed artworks to interact with people’s movements throughout the space. Using the parallax effect – which allows an image to change perspective according to the user’s point of view – images such as scenic views and starry night skies come to life in a user’s home.

The sound quality is also far superior to conventional televisions, with a 2.1-channel speaker developed in collaboration with leading audio brand Harman Kardon that emits sound directly to the left and right sides of the room and a supersized subwoofer that creates a 3D surround-sound experience.

MIRA packs a powerful performance in almost any lighting conditions, day or night. The dark field brightness is 66.7fL, which far exceeds the cinema standard when watching media at night. During the day, the picture quality is comparable to a conventional 100-inch television. The exceptional image quality is thanks to two innovative technologies: DualLight, a third-generation projection light source technology, and Eagle-Eye optics. The intuitive UX is controlled by XIMIMATE, a new software that was unveiled at the same time as MIRA.
