Austin’s Classic Gaming Convention: Game Over Videogames – Classic & Used Games from Atari to Xbox

TGIF Hi-Tech Chic fans!

I’m excited to inform you all that I will be at the Classic Gaming Convention in Austin this weekend covering it for Cutegeek and Hi-Tech Chic.

This years event is said to be one of the largest conventions in Texas. will have a 45,000 square-foot vendor and event hall to showcase and celebrate classic and retro video games. The two day fest includes free play on hundreds of retro game systems and arcades, retro game tournaments, costume contests, live video game musicians, a retro game museum and a large marketplace to sell, fix or buy your own retro games and consoles.*

Though most want to see my Waldo costume I’m changing it up a bit with my LED shoelaces, Flashton Statement LED shirt and retro hi tops. Also, since it’s National Dance Day on Saturday I will be doing the “running man”  in front of as many booths as I can and will post the videos on YouTube. If you see me come take a picture of me and do the running man next to me or Kid n’ Play. I will also be at the Tekforce show on Sunday at noon.

The Classic Game Fest will also be hosting a Pokemon Go meetup area complete with ongoing lures during the festivities! There are TONS of PokeStops near the event, and there’s even a Gym across the event lawn. Pokemon go

New Pages on Hi-Tech Chic: Videos and Gag Reels

New pagesToday I published two more pages on the Hi-Tech Chic site; Videos and Gag Reel. After 7 years of writing for technology I realized I have more videos than I thought I did. It also reminded me of how much fun I have had working for Cutegeek, Examiner and now Hi-Tech Chic (my own company).

The Videos Page covers events I’ve attended, unboxings and product demos. To see the new Videos Page just click here!

The Gag Reels are just that, funny bloopers of me messing up a product demo or unboxing or just being silly. I promise it will make you laugh! To view the Gag Reels click here.

This is just the beginning of what I hope to be a long career writing for technology. Thanks to all the followers and fans! There is more to come in 2016!

Press Release: Vuzix and Amimon Announce Joint Sponsorship of International Drone Racing Team

Nano Falcon XS - ModelFirst off, we actually have a Drone Racing Team? WHAT IN THE WORLD? When did that happen? What does the race consist? How do you qualify for the race? Can you participate if you have a helicopter like the one above? I wouldn’t qualify given I only know how to crash land my drone inside my condo. There should be a “How to fly Your Drone 1o1” class for people like me that don’t know to navigate the drone.

My only outdoor Drone experience was during the Obama keynote at SXSW. I was getting followed by the same drone everyday and it took pictures of me, how rude!

Below is the Official Press Release announced today. Good luck to those that are participating, may the force be with you!

ROCHESTER, N.Y., July 27, 2016 — Vuzix® Corporation (NASDAQ: VUZI), a leading supplier of Smart-Glasses, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies and products for the consumer and enterprise markets, is pleased to announce that the Company is partnering with Amimon, developer of the industry’s first all-digital HD drone vision system – the Connex ProSight, to sponsor an international drone racing team. This team will compete in select racing events worldwide using Vuzix iWear Video Headphones combined with the Connex’s ProSight latency-free wireless vision system.

The first major event will be the 2016 US National Drone Racing Championships being held at Governors Island in New York City on August 5-7, 2016. This event is scheduled to be broadcast and streamed by ESPN, as the companies’ products may be seen by nationally.  The event marks the first time an all-digital zero latency vision system will be used in a sanctioned racing event.

During select events, both racers and judging officials will wear Vuzix iWear products and the drones will be enabled with the Connex ProSight system. In product testing, the Vuzix eyewear combined with the Connex ProSight wireless solution delivered an unprecedented first person view (FPV) HD experience that provides superior vision performance, image quality and usability for racing pilots, as well as spectators. The crisp digital images, latency-free transmission and larger iWear display along with an extremely wide field of view can enable pilots to make quicker decisions while flying through a competitive race course at speeds in excess of 80 MPH.

Featured pilots at the Drone Nationals include: US #7 Christian Peterson (FPV_Provo), US #8 Mackenna McLure (McFly), US #12 Steve Zoumas (Zoomas), Vince Murdzak (Aerial_Engineer), and Ricky Martinez (Aerial_Advantage); with a few other leading pilots expected to join in the coming months.

The advantages of the Vuzix iWear combined with the Connex ProSight include an all-digital solution with zero latency. The Vuzix iWear Video Headphones delivers one of the largest fields of view at 60-degree, which is comparable to watching a 125″ screen in your living room, with the display floating in front of the racers’ that virtually transports the wearer into the cockpit of the drone. The sharp HD image the iWear delivers helps to create an immersive experience for pilots, enabling them to make the rapid decisions necessary in this fast paced competitive sport. The iWear provide a comfortable wearing experience for the pilot and also works with prescription glasses. Built-in batteries allow the pilot to participate in the sport for hours of racing.

The ProSight system – consisting of a combination of a real-time HD camera, transmitter and receiver, are all based on proven technology from CONNEX – featuring uncompressed 720P High-Definition over a digital link, a transmission range of up to 1000 feet and latency free, real-time video at all operating ranges. The solution addresses head on issues that have plagued first generation analog FPV products, including unclear images, and jammed frequencies caused by multiple simultaneous users.

“We are excited to sponsor this team together with Amimon in a new sport that is quickly gaining fans and participants. Combining the Connex ProSight solution with the Vuzix iWear Video Headphones will maximize the experience and competitive advantages for the drone racing pilots on the Vuzix team,” said Paul Travers, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vuzix.

“Both companies are committed to enhancing the FPV experience for pilots and fans alike and this is a synergistic combination that brings the sport to a new level. Partnering with Vuzix will further accelerate the adoption of the Connex ProSight all digital product in the drone enthusiast market by delivering a great way to maximize the benefits of our wireless transmission system,” said Ram Ofir, President and Chief Executive Officer of Amimon.

The Joey Everyday Carry JacketTravel Jacket

The Joey Everyday Carry Jacket is the most resourceful jacket with several different customized pockets for your electronics. When I first saw The Joey Everyday Carry Jacket via email the first thing I thought was Marty McFly’s in Back to the Future 2. I believe this product is probably the closest we will get to Marty’s jacket currently.

The Joey has 6 pockets that are different sizes for your different electronics. The Joey comes in two different fabrics, the Sturdy Waterproof Jacket or the Sweatshirt that both have similar features. I received the Sturdy Waterproof jacket to review and LOVED it. Talk about perfect timing because it was during Austin’s rain season so I got to test out how waterproofed it was first hand.  It was a rainy day but I had to go on my daily walk so I put on the jacket and headed out in the torrential rain. It was perfect and I stayed dry for the most part. It’s also very light and doesn’t take much room at all in your luggage.

Thermo 1I’m not sure if it’s because I’m not a Mom but I don’t have the unique gift of putting my hand on the forehead of said sick person and know they have a fever. Furthermore I can’t read the old school thermometers. What am I looking for exactly? What is this magical red line I should see on the thermometer and could they make the font harder to read? Wait, they have to put the thermometer where? That is an exit only region. Is putting it under your underarm a good reading? By the looks of it I think not. Why is the flu or fever so complicated? Why?!

The kind people at Nokia are helping people like me utilize a much more advance method to check your temperature. The Withings Thermo is an FDA-cleared temporal artery thermometer that is Wi-Fi connected. Through the Withings Thermo App parents or users will be able to help manage a fever and track temperature changes remotely.

I suppose the days of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” are long gone with Withings Thermo technology . Now your parents know if you’re faking it. Sorry kids you will need to come up with a smarter method to stay home from school.

In all honesty the Withings Thermo is perfect for parents and the results are accurate; nothing is worse than a sick baby. The Withings Thermo is also great for people like me who have an autoimmune disease (or any other debilitating diseases) with constant fevers and need to track their temperature.

The Withings Thermo is now available for purchase in the US exclusively at Apple Stores on and also on for $99.95. Below are the product specs provided by Withings Thermo and the official press release. Don’t forget fall is soon approaching so get your flu shot!

  • HotSpot SensorTM Technology – Thermo houses 16 infrared sensors that take more than 4,000 measurements, finding the hottest point of a user and delivering a highly accurate result.
  • Simple use – With Withings’ new thermometer, users can find their temperature in seconds, simply by pushing one button and scanning across their forehead, making it to perfect tool for families to track the health of their kids.
  • User-friendly display – After a vibration tells the user when the measurement is complete, the reading is displayed clearly on the thermometer along with color-coded feedback that shines green for normal, orange for moderated, and red for elevated temperature levels.
  • Dedicated App & Advice – Users have better control and can manage fever episodes for the whole family, by following temperature trends and getting a clear fever status at any time. In addition, users gain helpful insights from the Boston Children’s Hospital’s ThermiaTM tool on how to manage a child’s fever.

BOSTON, Mass.Withings, part of the Nokia family, today announced the availability of Thermo, the first Wi-Fi-connected temporal thermometer, exclusively at U.S. Apple stores and Originally announced at CES and honored with 2 CES 2016 Innovations Awards, Thermo goes to market in the US with FDA clearance and will provide one of the fastest, most accurate and most hygienic temperature measurements available. Thermo’s designated app also integrates with Boston Children’s Hospital’s Thermia tool, offering users helpful insights on how they can manage a child’s fever.

Thermo measures temperature from the forehead’s temporal artery, providing one of the most accessible and reliable assessments of body temperature, while ensuring a comfortable and sanitary process. With the new HotSpot Sensor Technology, a sophisticated array of 16 infrared (IR) sensors take 4000 measurements in just two seconds to detect the hottest point. A specially-designed algorithm then automatically corrects for biases, such as skin heat loss and the ambient temperature, allowing Thermo to deliver a single, highly-accurate temperature reading. Thermo is priced at $99.95.

Easy as 1, 2, 3
Users simply press a button and scan the thermometer across their forehead, up to 1cm above the skin to get an instant reading. Since there is no contact necessary, Thermo is exceptionally hygienic. Two vibrations notify users when the measurement is complete, and the temperature is displayed in either Celsius or Fahrenheit. In addition, the device takes the users’ age into account and provides instant color-coded feedback via an LED display that will glow Green for normal, Orange for elevated, and Red for high temperature levels. With Thermo, taking the temperature of a sleeping child, and evaluating their fever has never been easier. “Withings Thermo was designed to finally provide families with a solution that they can trust to provide highly accurate temperature readings in seconds, without having to wake the ill child or manually log their health levels,” said Cedric Hutchings, VP of Digital Health, Nokia Technologies.

The device operates on two AAA size batteries that can last up to two years, making it exceptionally portable – easily transported from the household medicine cabinet to a mother’s purse or father’s pocket.

Thermo App: A New Way to Manage Fevers
Thermo automatically sends temperature readings to your iOS or Android smartphone on the dedicated application, via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, allowing a seamless synchronization. The app gives the ability to better control and manage fever episodes for multiple users, by following the temperature trend and getting a clear fever status at any time. It also allows users to provide contextual information associated with readings, such as logging symptoms or making notes of any administered medicines. Notifications can be set to prompt parents with measurement reminders to better monitor fever episodes. The app also integrates with Boston Children’s Hospital’s Thermia tool, which provides educational information that can provide insights on how to care for a child with a fever.

FDA-Cleared Status
The Withings Thermo is a Class IIa Medical device and has been granted FDA-cleared status in the US. Thermo joins the Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor in the range of Withings’ FDA-cleared devices, and reinforces Withings positioning as a leader in digital health industry. Austin Startup Week, ATX Startup Crawl and NewCo Event

ATX Start up week

When I moved back to Austin from San Francisco I immediately started looking up various tech events throughout the city. The first events I attended were Austin StartUp week, NewCo Austin festivals and the ATX Startup Crawl.

This year Austin Startup week is October 3-7th at various locations in downtown Austin.  During Austin Startup week there are several different useful panels in regards to Startups so definitely check the schedule and also give yourself time between each panels. Austin Startup week is a great opportunity to meet with fellow StartUp owners from all over Austin.

The ATX Startup Crawl will be on Thursday, October 6th before the last day of Austin Startup week. I had a blast last year and hope to attend this year as well. You can’t go wrong with mixing geeks and cocktails; it’s rather comical. To attend the ATX Startup Crawl or if you would like more information the click here.

One may think “I have to wait all the way to October to hang out with my Startup friends? Blasphemy!”

Never fear they have a few events before then to meet with fellow entrepreneurs. On July 26th & 27th NewCo festival will be returning to Austin. At the NewCo event attendees get to choose from 90+ sessions led by founders and entrepreneurs within their headquarters throughout Austin. For more information or if you would like to attend NewCo click here.

I hope to see you guys at these events; as usual I will be attending all three events. If you see me definitely come over and say hi! I will also tweet about the events on @nrpena, @hitechchic, and @cutegeek if you’re curious to see what going on at each event.

Let the games begin!

5 Foods to Defy Post-Flight Dehydration this Summer

Summer time is filled with water sports on the lake, laying on the beach and outdoor BBQ parties. Though it’s a fun time we also need to make sure we are hydrated; especially if you live in Texas since its 100º outside. Dr. Christopher Calapai DO, an anti-aging and stem cell expert and long time health advisor to the New York Rangers hockey team, tells us how to fight the dryness with foods.

1.    Watermelon

“Watermelon is one of the most hydrating foods there are,” says Dr. Calapai “Its a great alternative to plane snacks which have large amounts of sodium, which in turn make you more dehydrated.” Pack big thick slices in a large plastic baggie and take them in your handbag, they won’t be taken away at TSA and will help you avoid the salty peanuts.

2.    Cucumbers

“Cucumbers are about 96 percent water,” says Calapai “They also contain no saturated fat or cholesterol and are high in Vitamin B6 which helps in the production of serotonin which is the brain chemical that controls mood.” You can slice them or cube them and also bring them along in a baggie or small container. Try making small cucumber-watermelon bites, they are pretty delicious!

 3.    Strawberries

When the airplane cookies come around say no thanks and reach for some strawberries instead! “Strawberries have the highest water content of any berry, 92 percent to be exact,” shares Calapai “You can enjoy the tart-sweet flavor without consuming too much sugar.”

4.    All in one salad

If you’re the type that needs an actual meal to feel satisfied bring along a salad. Add tomatoes, juicy chicken, plenty of lettuce and goat cheese. Lettuce is 96 percent water and tomatoes are 94 percent water. Go easy on the salt when seasoning your chicken and grill it or steam it instead of frying it to retain moisture. Make up for flavor and texture with some goat cheese! All the ingredients stay good at room temperature most of the day and there’s no heating required when it’s time for lunch/dinner.

5.    Coconut Water

Ok so you can’t totally avoid drinking liquids! “Coconut water is low in calories and high in naturally occurring hydration replenishing electrolytes, which regular water does not contain. It’s a better option than sports drinks which have artificial flavors and more calories,” advises Dr. Calapai. After you’re past security grab a bottle of coconut water from any of the airport mini-marts.

Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O. is an Osteopathic Physician board certified in family medicine, and anti-aging medicine. Proclaimed as the “The Stem Cell Guru” by the New York Daily News, Dr. Calapai is a leader in the field of stem cell therapy in the U.S. His stem cell treatments have achieved remarkable results in clinical trials on patients with conditions as varied as Alzheimer’s, arthritis, erectile dysfunction, frailty syndrome, heart, kidney and liver failure, lupus, MS and Parkinson’s. Comic ConThis year was the first year I ever attended Comic Con and my first one was the  Silicon Valley Comic Con that Wozniak hosted. I like this Comic Con better than the Dallas one. The  Silicon Valley Comic Con was more techy and larger than Dallas Comic Con.

For those that want to attend the  Silicon Valley Comic Con below is the full press release along with the dates, ticket information and venues. Hope to see you all in 2017 for the Silicon Valley Comic Con!

San Jose, Calif. – July 13, 2016 – Silicon Valley Comic Con (SVCC), Steve Wozniak’s popular expo celebrating the Age of the Geek will return to downtown San Jose the weekend of April 21-23, 2017. Over the course of the three-day show, the 2016 event welcomed 60,000 attendees who enjoyed a sold-out show floor of 350+ exhibitors and dozens of packed panels and fan Q&As. The largest fan expo in Northern California, Silicon Valley Comic Con generated $12.5 million of revenue for the city and surrounding businesses, making it one of San Jose’s largest revenue generating events. Pairing science with fiction, Silicon Valley Comic Con aims to inspire and entertain with celebrity appearances, science/tech discussions, film / TV screenings, panels with award-winning authors and artists, displays with comicbook artists, cosplay contests and more.

“Where else can you participate in Q&As with a renowned quantum physicist and the cast of ‘Back to the Future’ in one day? What an amazing time to be a geek!” said Steve Wozniak. “The first SVCC went well beyond everyone’s expectations, and we walked away from the event absolutely brimming with ideas for 2017. As technology and pop culture continue to drive each other, SVCC will showcase the best of Silicon Valley.”

After its successful inaugural year, SVCC has already outgrown the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. Three new surrounding locations will host SVCC events and exhibits: South Hall, The City National Civic and The California Theatre, with more venue expansion plans in the works. In addition, Silicon Valley Comic Con is working closely with Team San Jose and the City of San Jose to increase public parking and public transportation options.

“Nearly 90% of SVCC’s 2016 attendees said they would recommend the show to their friends, and the most common feedback was that they wanted even more great content across exhibits, panels and opportunities to meet or hear from their favorite celebrity and tech icons,” said Trip Hunter, CEO of Silicon Valley Comic Con. “Expanding into a variety of new venues will allow us to bring even more compelling content our fans and partners are seeking.”
