Press Release: Soft Surroundings opening in Austin on Sept 9th

As an Austin native and back in my day the Arboretum in north Austin was the place to shop or hang out until the Domain was built in 2007.  After that it seemed as though the Arboretum’s shops one by one were closing or relocating (except for a few that have remained).

Thankfully Soft Surroundings is opening a new store in the Arboretum on September ninth. This will be a breathe of fresh air for the Arboretum area which is much needed.

I will be attending the launch of the new Soft Surroundings store in the Arboretum on September 9th and looking forward to see the new store. Since most of you guys don’t live in Texas or prefer to shop online, Soft Surroundings has an online only page. To check out Soft Surroundings merchandise or learn more about Soft Surroundings click here.

The day of the Soft Surroundings event I will be tweeting information, pictures and videos on @nrpena, @hitechchic, and @cutegeek.

Below is the Official Press Release from Soft Surroundings:

New Kickstarter Campaign: M3D Pro- Affordable 3D Printer with Robust Feature Set

M3D Follows up Landmark Crowdfunding Campaign to Give Contributors Option to Pre-Order Latest Model

FULTON, MD (August 17, 2016) – Today, M3D, the leading consumer 3D printer manufacturer, announced its Kickstarter campaign to deliver the M3D Pro, a new offering designed to be the industry’s most reliable, feature-packed consumer printer yet. The company’s latest crowdfunding venture will appeal to its existing user base, as well as a new generation of enthusiasts and consumers looking to break into the 3D printing space.

The M3D Pro’s development was officially announced at CE Week 2016 in New York City. The printer is engineered to bridge the gap between consumer and commercial use, introducing industrial-grade features at an affordable price point of $500. Following the Micro 3D Printer, the larger, quicker and more advanced M3D Pro will deliver a reliable 3D printing experience derived from a number of innovations, retaining the ease-of-use and accessibility synonymous with the M3D brand.

“We confidently believe that the Kickstarter community is the community that truly understands and appreciates product innovation at its core,” said Michael Armani, co-founder & CEO, M3D. “When there is a true level of novelty at work, such as a printer that includes a feature set associated with high-end models but at a price point consumers can afford, the platform’s audience responds to it. We carefully designed the M3D Pro by incorporating direct customer feedback to show our audiences that we’ve heard them loud and clear. We’re dedicated to delivering a 3D printer that reaches a new benchmark of reliability and efficiency for both casual consumers and professionals alike.

The M3D Pro is the first 3D printer driven by two ARM-core processors and a network of more than two-dozen sensors. The new printer will also be outfitted with a heated bed option, outer dimensions of 10.5” cubed, and a much larger build volume – making it the most space-efficient and affordable consumer printer to hit the market. By rapidly pooling and fusing data, the M3D Pro maximizes the performance of the printer while also improving the overall printing experience through better consistency and reliability. This monitoring includes multiple measurements of speed, filament usage, temperature, and power levels. A standout feature of this sensory data allows the M3D Pro to recover from power outages by saving information as power levels drop off.

Highlights and tech specifications of the M3D Pro include:

  • Heated Print Bed: An innovative tempered heated glass surface automatically adjusts temperature, providing a consistent printing experience and allowing for easy removal of printed objects
  • Large Build Volume: Print objects up to 7.8” tall or 7.2” x 7.2” wide
  • Embedded Recovery: The M3D Pro can recover from print failure, such as from power outages, pauses, and filament shortage or jams
  • Stand Alone Mode: M3D’s software will automatically start printing and transfer print jobs to an internal memory chip, allowing the print to continue without being tethered to a computer
  • Advanced Sensor Network: The world’s first dual-ARM processor system fuses data from more than two dozen sensors to provide industry leading consistency and reliability
  • Construction: Precision ground metal components, glass surface heated bed, durable ABS Frame
  • Accuracy: 25-350 micron layer heights, 0.40 mm nozzle extrusion
  • Print speed: Typically prints filament at 60mm/s, and travels at speeds up to 120 mm/s
  • Two-year warranty: the M3D Pro comes with a standard two-year warranty, ensuring customers are fully supported with the printer

Software and Third Party Support

  • Third Party Filaments: Compatible with all industry standard 1.75 mm filaments, including particle-filled materials and high-temperature materials (up to 270 C)
  • Third Party Applications: Accepts standard G-codes, making it compatible with most 3rd party applications
  • Free M3D Software: Available on Windows and Mac

Press Release: Audio-Technica’s Wireless Turntable and Head of the Class Headphones for Back to School

Wireless Turntables?! Say What?! Announced today and just in time for back to school Audio-Technica introduced their newest product lines that include the AT-LP60-BT wireless turntable, QuietPoint® noise-cancelling ATH-ANC33iS in-ear and ATH-ANC50iS over-ear headphones, and Sound Reality ATH-SR5BT wireless on-ear high-resolution audio headphones. How cool would you be in the dorms spinning some classic vinyl?

I’ve been the queen of audio since I started writing for Cutegeek and Hi-Tech Chic. I’m also a HUGE fan of vinyl and when I lived in San Francisco I would frequently visit a great record store in the Haight/ Ashbury district that had a dollar bin.True story, I actually found the Thriller album in the dollar bin after Michael Jackson passed away. It actually shouldn’t have been in the dollar bin (neither the Stevie Wonder album I also got for a dollar) but since it was marked one dollar I got both for just that.

Turn table 1

I would love to test out the AT-LP60-BT Fully Automatic Wireless Belt-Drive Stereo Turntable with all my vinyl. It would be interesting to see if the audio of the AT-LP60-BT wireless turntable is as good as my not wireless old school record player. Besides that it’s wireless with bluetooth capabilities the AT-LP60-BT can pair with up to eight different pairs of speakers, headphones or other devices that utilize Bluetooth® wireless technology and can be stored in the AT-LP60-BT memory.

I hope to get a review unit of the AT-LP60-BT to test out and feature it in an article but till then here is the official press release from today.

STOW, OH, August 16, 2016 – Before long, students will be returning to school and getting ready for another year of studying, tests and homework. But when it’s time to relax, what better way to unwind than to listen to their favorite music with A+ sound quality and convenience? Audio-Technica makes it easy for students to enjoy high-quality music listening with the AT-LP60-BT wireless turntable, QuietPoint® noise-cancelling ATH-ANC33iS in-ear and ATH-ANC50iS over-ear headphones, and Sound Reality ATH-SR5BT wireless on-ear high-resolution audio headphones.
Audio-Technica’s AT-LP60-BT lets students listen to records using Bluetooth® wireless technology. LP enthusiasts can spin vinyl in their room and anyone with a compatible wireless device can listen elsewhere in the dorm or building. The fully automatic AT-LP60-BT (SRP: US$179.00) provides vinyl playback through compatible Bluetooth wireless speaker systems, headphones, A/V receivers or other wireless playback devices. It’s available in black (AT-LP60BK-BT), white (AT-LP60WH-BT) and navy (AT-LP60NV-BT).

The AT-LP60-BT features completely automatic operation for 33-1/3 and 45 RPM records. It remembers up to eight wireless devices for ready pairing with the listener’s favorite audio sources. The Audio-Technica AT-LP60-BT includes a built-in switchable phono preamp and pre-mounted cartridge and offers wired as well as wireless connectivity, enabling the turntable to be used in a wide variety of music systems.

Audio-Technica’s QuietPoint ATH-ANC33iS in-ear headphones provide up to 90% noise-cancellation along with outstanding sound and smartphone compatibility. The ATH-ANC33iS features an in-line microphone and controller for answering calls and controlling music. Its high-quality omnidirectional mic ensures clear voice transmission without requiring the user to speak directly into the mic. The headphones deliver detailed audio reproduction with a smooth frequency response and powerful bass.

The ATH-ANC33iS (SRP: US$79.00) includes ComplyTM Foam Tips, made out of special memory foam that expands to fit in the ear canal for superior sound isolation and comfort. The headphones come with standard silicone eartips in S, M and L, a soft carrying case, an airline adapter and an AAA battery.

The over-ear ATH-ANC50iS (SRP: US$99.00) provides outstanding noise cancellation performance (up to 87%). Its large 40 mm drivers deliver detailed, impactful sound with exceptional imaging in an immersive sound field. Like all Audio-Technica QuietPoint headphones, the ATH-ANC50iS will continue to work even if the battery runs out.

The ATH-ANC50iS has heavily padded earcups that fit snugly yet comfortably over the ears and further enhance isolation from environmental noise. It’s supplied with a detachable 3.9-foot (1.2 m) cable with in-line control and microphone, a zippered protective pouch, an airline adapter and an AAA battery.

The ATH-SR5BT wireless Sound Reality Hi-Res Audio headphones with Bluetooth technology offers superb high-resolution sound and cable-free convenience. The headphones employ aptX® sound-improvement technology, specifically created to yield the best-possible audio performance over a Bluetooth transmission. The smartphone-compatible ATH-SR5BT features specially designed 45 mm drivers with a 5Hz – 40,000Hz frequency range to deliver extraordinary resolution and clarity with a smooth, wideband tonal balance, and the ATH-SR5BT is Hi-Res Audio compliant when used with its supplied cable, making it ideal for use with high-resolution audio source material and playback devices.

The ATH-SR5BT (SRP: US$199.00) remembers the last eight wireless devices for ready pairing with the listener’s favorite audio sources and the headphones’ NFC (Near Field Communication) capability allows it to be paired with an NFC-compatible device simply by touching the device to the headphones. The ATH-SR5BT’s rechargeable battery provides up to 38 hours of continuous use and can be recharged using the included USB cable. The ATH-SR5BT is available in black (ATH-SR5BTBK) and white (ATH-SR5BTWH) and comes with a handy carrying pouch.

In Brief: The Move to Hi-Res Audio

While many listeners may believe that high-resolution audio came along with the introduction of the Compact Disc in 1982, constraints on the disc’s storage space always prevented CD audio (standardized at 44.1 kHz/16-bit) from fully and completely reproducing the original recorded sound. The advent and subsequent popularity of MP3s only made this problem more pronounced – the necessary compression of these files causes audio information to be lost, thus greatly reducing the audio quality. But with lossless audio file formats, faster Internet speeds, and storage space increasingly easy to come by (and in ever-smaller packages), the push is on to create audio equipment capable of capturing and reproducing true Hi-Res Audio, generally considered to be 96 kHz/24-bit or better. The Hi-Res Audio logo certifies that a product meets the Hi-Res Audio standards. Per these standards, headphones must have transducer frequency performance to at least 40 kHz. As a producer of these types of audiophile headphones since 1972, Audio-Technica is well-positioned to provide audio solutions that meet the demands of Hi-Res Audio media formats, allowing for the full reproduction of their extended sonic characteristics.

Michelle Young’s Daily Skincare Regiment

  1. One must establish a daytime program that can remain simple and consistent throughout the winter months. Since the daytime is when we are all exposed to the sun, Young recommends using a good moisturizer with sunscreen such as Eminence Bright Skin Moisturizer SPF 30 , or Jane Iredale’s mineral base.
  2. One must apply intuition as night falls. Young encourages us to ask ourselves “What does my skin feel like? What does it need?”. If you find that your skin feels dry, apply a good moisturizer for dry skin like SkinCeuticals New Triple Lipid Restore.
  3. If you find your skin feeling ‘slackened’, use an anti-aging , firming serum, and crème boost collagen. Young also highly recommends using a bamboo firming fluid and firm skin acai moisturizer to see faster results.
  4. Young says to up the exfoliation! The most effective way to keep that ‘fresh skin glow’ is to keep the dead layer off. Microdermabrasion, micro needling and micronutrients give MACRO results! All can treat this at home with ESPA Refining Skin Polish followed by regenerating moisture complex which keeps skin forward facing, smooth and protected.

Good Luck to all those students going back to school and check back for more Back to School products.

Bullock Museum: 1st in Texas to feature IMAX with Laser

BBMCongratulations my fellow Texans and Austinites we now have IMAX Laser at Bullock Museum. They opened their doors today for those looking forward to the IMAX Laser experience. The IMAX Laser at Bullock Museum will be the first IMAX Laser theatre in the great state of Texas!

Since I had no idea what the difference is between regular IMAX and IMAX Laser I goggled it! IMAX Laser provides audiences with the sharpest, brightest, clearest and most vivid digital images ever. The new IMAX Laser also has a whole new level of immersive audio than the regular IMAX.

If you are a Texan and trying to beat the heat check out the new IMAX Laser at Bullock Museum in Austin is a great option for you all.

For more information below is the official press release:

Aug. 2, 2016 (AUSTIN, TX) — The newest movie projection technology available is coming this fall to the Bullock Museum IMAX® Theatre, located in downtown Austin, Texas. After a temporary closure for renovation, the Bullock Museum’s theater will reopen in early October as the first theater in Texas, and one of only a handful in the world, to offer movies using the new proprietary IMAX® with Laser system. To celebrate its grand reopening on Oct. 7, 2016, the museum will host the U.S. premiere of the highly anticipated Voyage of Time, written and directed by Terrence Malick.

From August through early October, the Bullock Museum IMAX Theatre will undergo an extensive transformation as new laser projectors and enhanced 12-channel immersive audio systems are installed. Luxury seating, new carpet, and expanded concessions will enhance the moviegoing experience for visitors.

“When we reopen the theater, audiences will enjoy one of the most extraordinary theater experiences available in the country,” Dr. Victoria Ramirez, director of the Bullock Museum, said. “It is a high priority for us to offer the best movie viewing technology available in the Austin and Central Texas market.”

The museum signed an agreement with the IMAX Corporation earlier this year that will bring the company’s next-generation digital laser projection system, known as IMAX with Laser, to Austin.

Laser technology will replace the museum’s current IMAX xenon digital projection system and further enhance the IMAX experience for visitors. IMAX with Laser represents a quantum leap forward in cinema technology — providing audiences with the most vivid digital images ever to appear on screen combined with a whole new level of immersive audio. The technology will enable the theater to deliver the full array of the highest-quality IMAX digital content available.

Featuring a dual, 4K laser-driven system designed for both 2D and 3D formats, the output is nearly 50 percent brighter than existing systems. The new technology will allow for a significantly larger color range, which means viewers can see colors never before seen on screen. The projection will fill the biggest screen in Texas and audiences’ field of vision more effectively than the current system, and images will reach the highest contrast level available anywhere.

“This technology will offer the sharpest, brightest, clearest and most vivid images ever created on screen,” Bullock Museum Director of Film and Theaters Josh Jacobs said. “More contrast and a wider gamut of colors means more detail in the image and even more intense, lifelike images, creating a heightened level of realism that makes audiences feel like they are part of the movie.”

The museum also will install a next-generation sound system delivers that will double the sound level through an enhanced 12-channel system with boosted sub-bass. Additional speakers above the audience and on both sides of the theater provide an unrivaled, visceral sound experience. In addition to new projection and audio systems, new 3D glasses will optimize the advanced 3D technology system, and new theater seats and carpeting will be installed.

The Bullock Museum IMAX Theatre will be open through Aug. 4, 2016, and will remain closed for renovation until early October. The grand reopening  of the theater will kick off Oct. 7, 2016 as the Bullock Museum hosts the American opening of Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience. An examination of the birth and death of the known universe, the film will take audiences on a vast, yet personal, journey that spans eons, from the Big Bang to the age of the dinosaurs to our present human world and beyond.

To offer new, innovative programming during the closure, the museum’s Texas Spirit Theater, a 190-seat theater located on the second floor, will feature the award-winning animated short film World of Tomorrow by Austin filmmaker Don Hertzfeldt. It will show daily Aug. 5 to Oct. 7, 2016. A companion exhibition of Hertzfeldt’s original artwork, some never-before-seen, will be on view outside the theater through October 7, 2016.

Visit, or follow @BullockMuseum on Facebook and Twitter, to learn more about this exciting project and the museum’s exhibitions, films and programs.

Press Release: Vuzix and Amimon Announce Joint Sponsorship of International Drone Racing Team

Nano Falcon XS - ModelFirst off, we actually have a Drone Racing Team? WHAT IN THE WORLD? When did that happen? What does the race consist? How do you qualify for the race? Can you participate if you have a helicopter like the one above? I wouldn’t qualify given I only know how to crash land my drone inside my condo. There should be a “How to fly Your Drone 1o1” class for people like me that don’t know to navigate the drone.

My only outdoor Drone experience was during the Obama keynote at SXSW. I was getting followed by the same drone everyday and it took pictures of me, how rude!

Below is the Official Press Release announced today. Good luck to those that are participating, may the force be with you!

ROCHESTER, N.Y., July 27, 2016 — Vuzix® Corporation (NASDAQ: VUZI), a leading supplier of Smart-Glasses, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies and products for the consumer and enterprise markets, is pleased to announce that the Company is partnering with Amimon, developer of the industry’s first all-digital HD drone vision system – the Connex ProSight, to sponsor an international drone racing team. This team will compete in select racing events worldwide using Vuzix iWear Video Headphones combined with the Connex’s ProSight latency-free wireless vision system.

The first major event will be the 2016 US National Drone Racing Championships being held at Governors Island in New York City on August 5-7, 2016. This event is scheduled to be broadcast and streamed by ESPN, as the companies’ products may be seen by nationally.  The event marks the first time an all-digital zero latency vision system will be used in a sanctioned racing event.

During select events, both racers and judging officials will wear Vuzix iWear products and the drones will be enabled with the Connex ProSight system. In product testing, the Vuzix eyewear combined with the Connex ProSight wireless solution delivered an unprecedented first person view (FPV) HD experience that provides superior vision performance, image quality and usability for racing pilots, as well as spectators. The crisp digital images, latency-free transmission and larger iWear display along with an extremely wide field of view can enable pilots to make quicker decisions while flying through a competitive race course at speeds in excess of 80 MPH.

Featured pilots at the Drone Nationals include: US #7 Christian Peterson (FPV_Provo), US #8 Mackenna McLure (McFly), US #12 Steve Zoumas (Zoomas), Vince Murdzak (Aerial_Engineer), and Ricky Martinez (Aerial_Advantage); with a few other leading pilots expected to join in the coming months.

The advantages of the Vuzix iWear combined with the Connex ProSight include an all-digital solution with zero latency. The Vuzix iWear Video Headphones delivers one of the largest fields of view at 60-degree, which is comparable to watching a 125″ screen in your living room, with the display floating in front of the racers’ that virtually transports the wearer into the cockpit of the drone. The sharp HD image the iWear delivers helps to create an immersive experience for pilots, enabling them to make the rapid decisions necessary in this fast paced competitive sport. The iWear provide a comfortable wearing experience for the pilot and also works with prescription glasses. Built-in batteries allow the pilot to participate in the sport for hours of racing.

The ProSight system – consisting of a combination of a real-time HD camera, transmitter and receiver, are all based on proven technology from CONNEX – featuring uncompressed 720P High-Definition over a digital link, a transmission range of up to 1000 feet and latency free, real-time video at all operating ranges. The solution addresses head on issues that have plagued first generation analog FPV products, including unclear images, and jammed frequencies caused by multiple simultaneous users.

“We are excited to sponsor this team together with Amimon in a new sport that is quickly gaining fans and participants. Combining the Connex ProSight solution with the Vuzix iWear Video Headphones will maximize the experience and competitive advantages for the drone racing pilots on the Vuzix team,” said Paul Travers, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vuzix.

“Both companies are committed to enhancing the FPV experience for pilots and fans alike and this is a synergistic combination that brings the sport to a new level. Partnering with Vuzix will further accelerate the adoption of the Connex ProSight all digital product in the drone enthusiast market by delivering a great way to maximize the benefits of our wireless transmission system,” said Ram Ofir, President and Chief Executive Officer of Amimon.
