CANCELED: SKYLAB 2020 Party Will Proceed as Planned Bringing 29 Austin Bands To Scholz Garten

As of 3.13.20 this event is now canceled and postponed to a later date. Please check back on the new date for this event.

Even though SXSW 2020 is canceled, ALL SYSTEMS ARE GO for next Thursday, March 19, as Spaceflight Records and Mosaic Sound Collective host the inaugural liftoff of “SKYLAB 2020,” a day and night party featuring a lineup of 29 of Austin’s top local artists. The SKYLAB 2020 event kicks off at 11 a.m. through 2 a.m. at Austin’s historic Scholz Garten, located at 1607 San Jacinto, Austin, Texas 78701.

The event will now be hosted by Matt Pinfield, former VJ for MTV and host of the groundbreaking alternative music show, “120 Minutes.” Originally Val Kilmer was supposed to co-host the event however due to SXSW canceling and the coronavirus pandemic he has postponed his Austin trip stating:

“I was so looking forward to co-hosting SKYLAB 2020, but have decided to postpone my Austin trip to another time in the very near future,” said Val Kilmer. “When news got to me about SXSW canceling, I felt a great deal of disappointment for everyone involved. Our family at Mosaic put so much time and effort to bring our vision to reality and had an incredible week lined up for us through our partnership. I immediately told them that they need to come out to HelMel. We’ll close and clear out the parking lot and have a week long Texas backyard barbeque. We’ll play movies every night. We’ll find some bands. We need to help them keep their spirits up. Please know we are not cancelling our visit, just postponing for now. And I will be there in spirit next Thursday!”

The oldest live music venue in the state of Texas, 150-year-old Scholz German Biergarten and restaurant will play host to what promises to be one of the most talked-about events happening this festival season, including The Black Angels, The Sword, …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Brownout, Holy Wave, Residual Kid, Think No Think, Kalu and the Electric Joint, Peelander Z, Megafauna, Löwin, The Sideshow Tragedy, Croy and the Boys, Buffalo Hunt, Galactic Protector, Ponytrap, The Human Circuit, Como Las Movies, Tim Crane, Urban Heat and many more.

During the daytime portion of the event, the City of Austin Music & Entertainment Division, part of the Economic Development Department, is hosting the Love Local Live Music Meet-Up. The reception is open to all, features light bites and beverages, and takes place in the main dining room at Scholz Garten from 4 – 6 p.m.

“We are aware that this is a difficult time for our community of musicians, venues, and local businesses and we stand united to support in any way that we can,” said Dan Redman, Founder of Mosaic Sound Collective. “Our commitment is to move forward with SKYLAB 2020 to deliver an amazing live music experience when this city needs it the most! We will continue to work closely with the City of Austin on any recommendations they have for health and safety as we lead up to the event.”
