Project Wing, Guzman y Gomez Mexican Taqueria and Domino’s Pizza Drone Delivery Initiatives

In September 2017, Guzman y Gomez partnered with Alphabet’s (Google’s parent company) X’s Project Wing to help them with their trial delivery drones that will deliver burritos to homes in Australia. This project started when Project Wing asked Guzman y Gomez to be their first launch partner in the delivery of Guzman y Gomez burritos to people via drone. They immediately said yes!

How do you order Guzman y Gomez burritos to be delivered via drone?

Future customers will order the burritos via an app. Their order is sent to the Guzman y Gomez Drone Mothership. The drone leaves the launch site and hovers over the Guzman y Gomez landing pad at about 5m above the ground. The drone drops a hook, Guzman y Gomez staff attach the order, and it takes off to the delivery destination. The drone drops the order gently on the ground, the hook detaches and the drone then flies back to the launch site.

This isn’t the only fast food restaurant testing out drone delivery! Since September 26th Domino’s has been doing test deliveries to actual customers out of one Auckland store.

The drone flights, powered by American drone company, is automated but per New Zealand law a human must be nearby to supervise and there are limits on how far Domino’s will be able to deliver. New Zealand’s drone rules don’t currently allow a drone to fly farther than the drone’s operator can see.

How do you order Domino’s Pizza to be delivered via drone?

A Domino’s customer who requests a drone delivery will receive a notification when their delivery is approaching. After going outside and hitting a button on their smartphone, the drone will lower the food via a tether. Once the package is released, the drone pulls the tether back up and flies back to the Domino’s store. Initially there may be an extra charge for drone delivery but Dominos hope in the long run to add no additional fees for drone delivery.

These drone delivery initiatives are just be the beginning! Amazon will be jumping on board as well. In the near future I foresee consumer goods being delivered via drone sooner that you think!
