May Celebrates National Pet Month and Pet Cancer Awareness Month

May celebrates pets and benefits that pets bring to people’s lives with National Pet Month in the USA and Pet Cancer Awareness Month. It is observed annually in the United States in May and during the month of April in the United Kingdom. May is also Pet Cancer Awareness Month with goals to inform pet owners of the potential dangers their pet may face from cancer. We gathered information and resources for all the pet owners and pet lovers out there for both National Pet Month and Pet Cancer Awareness Month below.

National Pet Month’s goals each year is to:

  • Promote the benefits of pet ownership
  • Support pet adoption by visiting ASPCAHumane Society, Adopt-a-Pet.com or other reputable pet adoption sites.
  • Make people aware of the benefits of pets for people and people for pets
  • Increase public awareness of services available from professionals who work with animals
  • Raise awareness of the role, value and contribution to society of working companion animals locally

Pet Cancer Awareness Month

As a pet owner myself, the last thing I want to think about is them having cancer. Sadly, “According to The Veterinary Cancer Society, cancer is the leading cause of death found in 47% of dogs, especially dogs over age ten, and 32% of cats. Dogs get cancer at about the same rate as humans, while cats get fewer cancers.”

In celebration of Pet Cancer Awareness Month, there are several helpful sites that can be your go-to if you have concerns about your pet’s health. One site is Petnet that’s the goal is to help you raise healthy and happy pets and being fully informed and armed with good intelligence is a requirement for every loving pet owner.

They have provided a curated list of excellent resources to help you understand the state of cancer diagnosis and treatment in pets and the nature of ongoing study and research into causes and prevention of cancers in pets.
