Ataribox Pre-Order is Just In Time for the Holidays 2017

For any 80’s baby the name Atari was a great past time and maybe their first console. After leaving the hardware business in 1996 most thought they wouldn’t hear about Atari again. In a great surprise, Atari is back with their new Ataribox gaming console concept. In June of this year Atari teased E3 attendees and journalist with this Ataribox trailer video.

While at E3 they released images of the box but did not provide any technical specifications. Then in September 2017 Atari provided more details on the software including the plans to use Linux and provide an open platform for other compatible software to be installed. They also said their planned release date would be in the second quarter of 2018. The announcement also stated some of the funding for the unit will come from a planned Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to be launched before the end of 2017. Feargal Mac Conuladh, GM of Ataribox, said they chose Indiegogo to help with international sales and hardware support, including a close relationship with Arrow Electronics.

The Ataribox will be designed to play games from the Atari 2600 via emulation and also expected to offer a Linux operating environment that will allow users to install other compatible games. It will be based on a customized AMD central processor and will use Radeon graphic processing technology. Per various pictures of the Ataribox at E3 the console will also have HDMI and USB ports, an Ethernet port, and an SD card slot.

According to several news outlets and Wikipedia the Ataribox should be available for pre-order on December 14th for approximately $250.00 – $300.00 based on configuration options. The games for the console have not yet been released with only 2 days left before the pre-ordering date. Their Indiegogo campaign has also not launched yet.

They currently have a waitlist you can join on the Ataribox site located here: https://ataribox.com/. When you signup for the waitlist your will also have a chance to get 33% off the Ataribox.

To be honest the Ataribox site does not provide much information besides images of the future Ataribox but if you like to check it out click here.
